#ElHotelDeLaHistoria

A BASQUE/ CUBAN HOTEL

The 4-star Puente Colgante Boutique Hotel is designed for lovers of world exploration, fine cuisine and the art of living.

Manuel Calvo y Aguirre, the central figure in our story, made his fortune in Havana in the mid 19th century from the business of growing sugar cane. He returned to Portugalete in 1898 and set up residence in the mansion that now houses the Puente Colgante Boutique Hotel.

In his will he stipulated that after his death his home should be turned into a hotel and that the profits should be used to distribute food to the needy.

In the early years of the 20th century guests included such illustrious personages as Empress Zita of Bourbon-Parma and King Alfonso XIII of Spain, who hosted large parties in the function room of the hotel.

el paladar

Zuriñe García is taking the reins at the El Paladar. She is one of the few female haute cuisine chefs who have run a Michelin starred restaurant. She also received an award from the Basque Gastronomic Academy in 2018 as best restaurateur.

We offer a range of dishes that combine traditional Basque fare, prepared with the utmost care using only the finest ingredients, and the creative vision of our renowned chef with all her expertise.

el TXAKOLÍ

“El Txakoli” represents the foundation, roots and the purest essence of El Paladar by Zuriñe García.

A cult of tradition that perpetuates the recipes of our “amumas” (grandmas).  A celebration of homemade food of all life where warmth, love to please and almost sacred respect for the product, especially those originating from our land.

It is the living testimony of the “casas de comida” (eateries) of yesteryear, where families passed on the secret of the recipe from generation to generation and where the bread asked for its space to flock the bottom of the dish.

cromwell

As a guest, you have the use of the Cromwell cocktail lounge, an ideal spot for enjoying a drink in a casual atmosphere to the sound of good music.

No te pierdas nuestras animadas veladas y las “Vinilo-Sessions” de los domingos.

¿Te hemos dicho ya que somos super fans de los Beatles?

Txoko is a Basque word whose root meaning is “corner” or “small place”. It is the name given to the region’s typical gastronomic societies, the main feature of which is that members do their own cooking.

Txokoa represents our idiosyncrasy, our internationalisation, our cuisine, our home, our warmth and our welcome.

The venue also features a cookery learning centre where renowned chefs can teach you to cook typical dishes.

The Transporter Bridge

We have some exclusive offers to help you get a close view of this unique structure.

We are just beside the Puente Bizkaia transporter bridge, known locally as the Puente Colgante or “hanging bridge”, an engineering masterpiece that has been declared a Human Heritage site by UNESCO.

Cross the river via the walkway along the top or watch the sun set over the bridge as you sip a cocktail on your balcony or on the hotel terrace.

The hotel stands on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela, which also has Human Heritage status.  Guests who are walking the Way can take time out to relax in our comfortable rooms, where they are provided with a welcoming package.
